A mechanical engineer by trade, he worked for Colt Manufacturing and later founded Billings & Spencer, a machine tool company. More information may be found at his Wikipedia entry and at his All-Biographies entry. Presided over all three bodies in the Valley of Hartford. As Thrice Potent Master Billings served more terms (13) than any other Thrice Potent Master, or any presiding officer in any body in the Valley of Hartford at any time. In fact, Ill. Brother Billings served more years as a presiding officer (26) than any other brother, and more than twice as many as Ill. Brother Wheeler, who served 12 terms.

Born in the Hockanmum part of East Hartford. Aspired to be a surgeon, but ended up in farming, growing food for market as well as tobacco. In 1856 joined Orient Lodge #62 (now part of Columbia #25). He was active in York Rite (Pythagoras Chapter and Wolcott Council) as well as Scottish Rite. Also belonged to the Putnam Phalanx of East Hartford and the East Hartford Grange. Served as Superintendent of Sunday School at Second Congregational Church in East Hartford for 22 years, and was also a Justice of the Peace.
