History of the Valley of Hartford

The Valley of Hartford's history begins with the chartering of the Charter Oak Lodge of Perfection on May 19, 1864. Twelve years later, the Hartford Council Princes of Jerusalem and the Cyrus Goodell Chapter of Rose Croix of H.R.D.M where chartered on August 16, 1876. Until 1984, members of the Valley of Hartford belonged to the Connecticut Consistory in Norwich, Connecticut. However, on September 25, 1983, the Nathan Hale Consistory was chartered in the Valley of Hartford, in Hartford, Connecticut.

Past Presiding Officers

For many years, the Valley of Hartford's annual Directory and Schedule has listed only the living past presiding officers of our four subordinate bodies, as with a history over 100 years, it would be difficult to list them all in the space available to us. However, the history of each of the bodies is long and rich, and filled with names of the great men of the past who have presided over our Lodge, Council, and Chapter, and more recently, our Consistory. Here, then, are links to pages that list the presiding officers of each of the subordinate bodies of the Valley of Hartford:

Class Honorees

The Valley of Hartford has often named candidate classes in honor of brethren or events, or in memory of departed brethren. Here is a list collated from various old Directories from the Valley.

Recipients of the Arthur M. Brown 33° Meritorious Service Award

The Constitution of the Supreme Council provides that an "Award of Meritorious Service" may be conferred upon members of the Scottish Rite, who by reason of meritorious service of a Masonic character, are worthy of such recognition.

As with our past presiding officers, we only have room to print the living recipients of the Arthur M. Brown 33° Meritorious Service Award. Here then is a link to a listing of all of the Valley of Hartford recipients.

33° Masons of the Valley of Hartford

From the website of the Supreme Council, AASR, NMJ: "Achieving the 33° is an honor that can be bestowed upon a Scottish Rite Mason. It is not campaigned for. It is granted solely by the Supreme Council. A 33° Mason is a Master Mason who has exhibited knowledge, passion and sacrifice to his craft. The Supreme Council awards the 33° as a way of honoring outstanding and selfless work performed in the Rite or in public life. At its Annual Session the Supreme Council elects members of the Rite to receive the degree. Members unanimously so elected become Honorary Members of the Supreme Council."
